The Sudan Open Archive is a digital
library of historical knowledge about Sudan, allowing visitors from
around the globe to learn of the struggles of Sudanese aid
workers.
The current version of the Archive consists primarily of
technical reports and unpublished grey literature from the history of
aid in Sudan, covering the period from the start of Operation
Lifeline Sudan in 1989 to the present day.
There are many new features that were implemented by Digital Library
Consulting that are unique to the Sudan Open Archive.
The most groundbreaking of these is highlighting search
terms on the page images so visitors can easily find what they have
searched for while reading the pages.
Another striking new feature is
on-the-fly document generation out of the raw image files for
download by visitors, saving space and allowing more data to be
stored on the distribution DVD.
Finally, thumbnails of the document
pages are aligned vertically down the left side of the page while
reading, giving the visitor an overview both of their place in the
document and what is on subsequent and previous pages.
These changes were made possible by the
extensible nature of the Greenstone Digital Library software — new abilities and formats can be
added easily and quickly.
The Sudan Open Archive is made available both on the Internet and on DVD,
allowing the information it contains to be distributed to locations where Internet access is unreliable
or unavailable.
