Veridian makes your digital collections available in full-text searchable
form to everyone, everywhere, on the Internet. It is designed specifically to support collections of
digitized printed materials (e.g. newspapers, books, and journals), and to take advantage of the latest
technologies used in large modern digitization projects.
How Veridian works
You digital collections reside on a Veridian server, which is either installed on your local computer
systems or is hosted on computer systems belonging to Digital Library Consulting. Your users then access
your collections over the Internet, using standard web browsers. No additional software plug-ins or
downloads are required by your users.
METS/ALTO standards
The combination of METS and ALTO was originally developed by the METAe project,
and was later adopted by the Library of Congress for their large-scale National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).
METS/ALTO has been used in many large (and small) newspaper digitization projects, as
well as a number of projects digitizing books and journals.
METS/ALTO provides rich digital objects, which allows for extremely rich digital library
presentation systems to be built. It is our belief, born out by the many large institutions
using METS/ALTO internationally, that METS/ALTO is the best format currently available for
the digitization of newspapers and other printed materials. If you are considering a new
digitization project please contact us to discuss METS/ALTO.

Summary of features and benefits
– Veridian was designed to support the METS and ALTO digitization standards.
– Veridian supports the display of newspapers, books, journals, and all printed materials
digitized to METS/ALTO standards. It also supports the display of non-textual items like photographs.
– Expert support from Digital Library Consulting allows Veridian to support
data in alternative formats. In some cases it is also possible to convert data from other formats to METS/ALTO, for use
with Veridian. Do you already have digital data which is not in METS/ALTO format? Contact us to
discuss what we can do for you.
– Veridian is hugely customizable, and can be modified to have a completely
new “look and feel”, or to integrate with existing library software systems (e.g. federated search systems,
document management systems, authentication or digital rights management systems). Do you have a great vision for how
you would like your digital collection to be presented? Contact us to discuss what we can do to
make your collection truly unique and innovative.
– Veridian is hugely scalable — multi-million page collections are possible.
– Veridian uses Unicode throughout, so can support collections of materials
in almost any language. The Veridian user interface is available in several languages, with support for new languages easily
added.

while remaining affordable to projects of all sizes.
– Veridian is built upon the mature, stable, and well-tested Greenstone
digital library software platform.
